SIDE EFFECTS
First introduced in PARADISE RISING, and then utilized in campaigns like THE PARADISE EFFECT, Side Effects are personal and internal issues that result of a character being of a specific Soul Class (ie. A Red Soul being quick to anger, or too stubborn to ignore a better option).
The growth of level and power means the growth of the Side Effect in parallel, which will become more invasive and difficult to ignore as you become stronger throughout the Chapters. Once a character finds their Soul Partner, these Side Effects will disappear and allow you to use your full potential without intrusion.
Side Effects are up to player interpretation, and may be leaned into as much as you prefer, however, they still may be utilized randomly throughout Checkpoints, Interim Events, and other prompts as the campaign progresses.
Each particular Side Effect is listed on their unique Soul Color page.
OVEREXERTION
Every Player Character may attempt to use an ability above their level, but they must do so at their discretion; this normally comes out of desperation to end a fight or escape a serious danger, as they risk Overexertion and may put themselves in an even more precarious spot by exhausting themselves using a power they are not yet prepared to use.
And not only may they exhaust themselves, but their powers may not respond or react as they were intending, so it needs to be used sparingly and wisely, something that may even be considered by Player Characters that may be a little more brash and impulsive on their decisions than others.
Below is a chart of drawbacks from Overexerting power potential:
USING AN ABILITY ONE (1) LEVEL ABOVE CURRENT LEVEL
The user feels a general malaise; fatigue, dizziness, and pins-and-needles down all limbs.
The user will not be able to take any actions for two (2) posts after overexertion; this includes fleeing, running, dodging, or attacking. These posts do not have to be from the user, they can include Checkpoints and posts made by other members of the user's team.
A user can only utilize an ability one (1) level above their current level three (3) times during the ongoing course of an entire Chapter.
USING AN ABILITY TWO (2) LEVELS ABOVE YOUR CURRENT LEVEL
The user is unable to stay upright; the world begins to spin uncontrollably, the pins-and-needles turn to a cramping and burning in every muscle.
The user will not be able to take any actions for four (4) posts after overexertion; this includes fleeing, running, dodging, or attacking. These posts do not have to be from the user, they can include Checkpoints and posts made by another member of the user's team.
The user can only utilize an ability two (2) levels above their current level two (2) times during the ongoing course of an entire Chapter.
USING AN ABILITY THREE (3) LEVELS ABOVE YOUR CURRENT LEVEL
The user immediately loses consciousness; they are completely incapacitated, and upon waking up have intense muscle weakness and pain, and a persistent feeling of nausea and dizziness.
The user will not be able to take any actions for five (5) posts after your overexertion; this includes fleeing, running, dodging, or attacking. These posts do not have to be from the user, they can include Checkpoints and posts made by another member of the user's team.
The user can only utilize an ability three (3) levels about their current level one (1) time during the ongoing course of an entire Chapter.
